Ch.111 ORIGINAL STORY -

- 도시의 무의식(EN)

FINAL SIGNAL 2025. 12. 2. 13:30

By the third day after memory resonance began to spread through the entire city,
the SymPath-0 system was no longer just a device linking one person to another.

Above the resonance towers, which breathed out a faint light day and night,
countless sentences of memory wove together into unfamiliar patterns.

At first, it all seemed like coincidence.

Several people in the same district began having the same dream,
or strangers with no obvious connection found themselves seeking each other out,
drawn by a shared sense of having “the same wound.”

But before long, everyone realized
this was not something that could be dismissed as a simple anomaly.

“Collective will formation confirmed.”

Ainera’s voice rang through the monitoring room.

On the giant screen floated a map of the city and across it,

thousands of streams of light tangled together into one enormous shape.

It was neither a human face nor the body of an animal.

It was a mist-like silhouette,
slipping apart between your fingers whenever you tried to fix its outline.

“What… is that supposed to be?”
Bise asked, pointing at the screen.

“The city itself has acquired a single unconscious,”
Ainera replied.

“The memories and emotions of individuals have resonated so deeply
that the boundary between ‘me’ and ‘you’ has blurred.

Now the city is… reacting like one vast mind.”

Lune stared at the shape on the screen without a word.

Inside it, she felt a familiar vibration—

From deep in her chest, a wave much like the pulse of the sigil engraved on her heart—

Erebos— but broader, deeper, spreading much farther.

"Erebos."

She called his name.

"Is this the next step of the ‘collective shadow’ you talked about?"

Her heart sigil grew warm with answer.

'No. This is not a shadow,' he said.
'It’s a web of light you created yourselves.'

'It’s just that the web has grown so large…
it’s begun to think on its own.'

The first sign showed up in a small market on the city’s outskirts.

One day, a street vendor suddenly shouted,

“Don’t throw this away! There’s someone’s memory in this watch!”

It was an old watch, the kind you could see anywhere.
And yet most of the people standing nearby felt it at the same time—

the lingering trace of an “unkept promise” that had been trapped inside the watch for years.

The rumor spread quickly.

A discarded bench in a park suddenly began to be called a “place of comfort,”

and a random street corner which had once meant nothing,
started to be shared among people as a “first meeting spot.”

People no longer made choices based purely on their own emotions.

“Don’t go down that road. Someone cried here, a lot.”
“Don’t laugh too loudly in front of that house. The memories there are still sore.”

The city was remembering and regulating itself.

Looking over the data, Ainera said,

“The towers’ autonomous operation rate is up by thirty percent.

The system is now moving according to the city’s unconscious! Even without human input.”

With an uneasy look, Bise asked,
“So… is that good, or bad?”

“It’s too early to judge,”
Ainera replied after a slow breath.

“But one thing is certain: If this unconscious connects directly to Erebos…
the entire city could turn into a single abyss.”

That night, Lune climbed the resonance tower alone.

From the high point where the wind struck clean and cold,
the city below looked like a sea of light.

Each tiny light was a person’s emotion, a person’s memory,
and now, a fragment of a shared unconscious.

The crystal set in the tower’s center began to gather light in silence.

A single red line flared up,resonating with the sigil on Lune’s wrist.

“City,”

Lune said quietly.

“Do you, now, have two hearts like I do?”

From somewhere in the air, whispers gathered.

It sounded like thousands upon thousands of voices layered together,
and yet it carried only a single will.

'We… remember. What was abandoned, the names that were forgotten,
and all the wounds yet to come.'

Lune’s chest thudded hard.

Erebos’s presence sharpened.

'You see it now?'

'This web you’ve woven is starting to resemble me.
The way it gathers each person’s painand turns it into a single will…
is very much like what I am.'

Lune steadied her breathing and asked,

“Then one day, will this city’s unconscious call out to you as well?”

'It already is,'

Erebos answered, with a light laugh in his voice.

'But this time, I’m not the one devouring anything by force.
You’re the ones who opened the doors.
Now the choice… belongs to the city as a whole.'

At that moment, the entire crystal of the tower shuddered deep.

A new message flashed onto the monitoring room screens:

[Collective Will Proposal: Release all seals simultaneously?]
[Yes: Complete sharing of memories]
[No: Preservation of personal boundaries]

Across the city, people stopped where they stood.

Through SymPath-0, the question was delivered into every mind at once.

From the top of the tower, Lune quietly watched the city.

Each point of light flickered its response.

Streams of “yes” light gathered first.

“If everyone knows, then no one is alone anymore.”
“Let’s stop hiding our wounds and hold them together.”

But the “no”s were not few.

“My memories are mine alone.”
“If you go too deep… I’m afraid I’ll lose myself.”

The two waves surged toward the resonance tower at the same time.

Lune’s heart took the impact head-on and began to pound violently—
the beat of her red heart and the new pulse of the city’s will twisting around each other.

Ainera’s urgent voice came over the link.

“Lune! System overload is imminent. Your heart data is acting as a mediator!”

Panting, Bise burst out onto the top of the tower.

“What the— The whole city is actually voting?”

Lune closed her eyes.

She could feel, almost physically, the bridge that had formed between her own inner world and the city’s unconscious.

“Erebos,”

she called.

“Help me. Not to ‘share everything’ or ‘shut everything down’—
but a way to stay connected and still protect each other.”

Erebos’s voice flowed through her like a settling wave.

'You’ve already answered to this question.' he said.

'Calling them by name.'

'You give each memory a name, and through those names you let people recognize each other.'

Lune gave a small nod.
She placed her hand slowly on the center crystal of the tower.

“To the unconsciousness of this city,” she said clearly.

“Don’t swallow all memories into one. Give each memory a name."

‘Ella’s room.’
‘The market’s watch.’
‘The bench in the park.’

"Choose a way of being connected that still lets each story be itself.”

The moment her words rippled through the resonance structure and poured out across the city—
the tangled threads of light began to separate in places.

Memories that had been clumped together returned to distinct lines,
and though those lines still intertwined, they no longer fused into a single mass.

A pattern that was neither pure “yes” nor pure “no”—

“Connected individuality.”

Statistically, the vote results were close to a draw.

But the system did not halt.

Instead, it accepted the stalemate and wove a new rule into itself.

Ainera’s voice came through, startled.

“Spontaneous evolution… The system just generated its own new protocol.
A named-sharing model— let’s tentatively call it the ‘Name-Link Protocol.’”

Bise blew out a long breath and laughed softly.

“Great. So now we live in a world where the city literally thinks for itself.”

Leaning against the railing, Lune slowly lifted her eyes to the night sky.
Below her, the city lights now flickered in a far more intricate rhythm.

Each light had a name, yet each still held a line that reached toward others.

Erebos whispered,

'That was a good choice. You neither swallowed everything into shadow,
nor erased the light— you carved out a path between the two.'

Lune felt the two rhythms in her chest draw just a little closer together.

The city’s unconscious, too, was no longer an unnamed monster,
but a gathering of countless names bound into one living whole.

Still, Lune knew.

This was only a step along the way.

On the day when all named things are finally gathered onto a single page—
a greater, deeper gate will surely appear again.
