(Erebos).”
English Ver.
The city was still unnaturally quiet.
Since the night the first seal had broken, the sky had not once become truly bright.
Even the faint light that tried to seep through the clouds seemed to hesitate,
as if it needed someone’s permission before it dared to fall.
For the first time, Lune became clearly aware that her own heart felt unfamiliar.
She could no longer tell if what was beating in her chest was really just a “heart,”
or something else tangled together with it.
Ever since she had touched the abyss,
her pulse was no longer just a sign that she was alive.
It sounded like a door somewhere, opening and closing—
like the hinge between two worlds.
“Quiet, huh.”
Bise sauntered up beside her and leaned his back against the wall.
“Nothing’s happened in this district since that night.
People can’t see it, but… everyone knows it. That something changed.”
Lune let out a short breath.
“If this is just a brief pause to catch our breath…
then soon enough, we’re going to have to inhale again.”
Bise stared at her face for a while,
then forced out a laugh, as if to lighten the air.
“Still… your eyes aren’t burning completely red.
That’s gotta count as a good sign, right?”
Instead of answering, Lune wrapped her hand around her wrist.
Beneath the back of her hand, the red sigil trembled ever so slightly in time with her heartbeat.
A new mark, etched there when the first seal broke—
the moment she had clasped hands with the shadow in the abyss.
The sigil had grown more solid than before.
And with that solidity came greater danger.
Just then, a familiar vibration slid into the air.
A slow, deep tremor, like an ancient machine far underground
dragging itself awake.
Lune’s gaze turned toward the ruins of the old cathedral in the distance.
“Again…?” Bise frowned, following her eyes.
“Over there. It’s moving again.”
Lune hesitated for a heartbeat, then nodded.
“I have to go.
This isn’t over yet.”
—
The inside of the ruined cathedral still held the scars of the first seal.
Shattered pillars.
Arcane circles cracked across the floor.
Faded traces of blue barriers, half-burned out.
As soon as Lune stepped inside,
the sigils underfoot glowed faintly in response to her tread.
“You’ve come back.”
A voice echoed from somewhere above.
Near the ceiling, a transparent hologram flickered to life—
Ainera’s face appearing in the suspended light.
It was impossible to tell whether this was a live feed
or a projection left behind by the monitoring system.
Her eyes, as always, watched Lune with no hint of emotion.
“Since the first seal, the resonance value of the abyss has shifted sharply,” Ainera said.
“Your heart’s sigil and the remnants beneath this cathedral are sending signals back and forth.
Under normal conditions… it’s far too early for them to react.”
Lune stopped in front of the altar.
“Then who’s trying to rush it open?”
“Something inside you, or…”
Ainera narrowed her eyes slightly.
“Someone outside you,
shaking this place by reaching through you.”
The air grew cold.
At the center of the altar, where a black crystal had once floated,
a dark red mist began to rise.
It writhed like a shadow desperate to seize a shape.
Lune steadied her breathing and focused on the mark at her wrist.
It felt like she had grown a second heart—
two overlapping beats pulsing in her chest.
“Lune.”
Ainera’s voice turned firm.
“This time, you have to ask the question first.
Not ‘who are you’—
ask ‘what are you.’”
At that moment, two eyes opened within the mist.
They were hollow and overflowing at the same time,
holding too much emotion in emptiness.
They resembled Lune’s own eyes,
but older somehow, and shaded in a deeper darkness.
“We meet again.”
The voice of the abyss brushed against the world.
Lune did not run this time.
She had already decided she wouldn’t.
“You were… the feelings I threw away,” she said.
“Fear. Anger. Giving up.
But now… that’s not all you are anymore, is it?”
The shadow’s mouth curled faintly, like a smile.
“Correct. I’m no longer yours alone.”
The sigils in the floor flashed all at once.
Beneath the cathedral, beneath the city,
down into the deeper abyss of Nexer—
the fractures running through them all answered in unison.
Behind Ainera’s hologram,
a flood of warning screens flared into view.
“Collective resonance values rising.”
“Link with unidentified memories detected.”
“Second-layer seal ‘Field of Nameless Graves’—activation in progress.”
Images flickered through Lune’s mind—
rows of blank gravestones she had seen before.
Stones whose names had been scraped away.
Test subjects whose existence was never acknowledged.
And… herself, somewhere among them.
And between those graves,
she remembered a whisper:
Please… remember us.
“You’re not just my shadow anymore,”
Lune said quietly.
“I never was, from the beginning,”
the abyss replied, its form melting into the shadows
spread across the cathedral walls.
“Discarded things. Forgotten names. Deleted memories.
All of them want to open their eyes again—
through you.”
Lune’s hand shook, just a little.
The tremor was no longer just fear.
“So that’s why…
you called me a key.”
Ainera cut in softly.
“Lune. You have to decide.
Will you cut this current off here—
or accept it?”
Her heart still thumped in that doubled rhythm.
One beat for survival.
The other for connection to the world.
Lune closed her eyes once, then opened them.
She took a step forward, straight toward the abyss.
“I’m done running,” she said.
“But… that doesn’t mean I’ll just do what you want.”
The eyes in the mist narrowed.
“Is this a negotiation, then?”
“You’re the sum of discarded memories,” Lune replied.
“But just because you were discarded
doesn’t mean the world deserves to be destroyed.
I’ll remember you.
I’ll call your name.
So—let’s find a way that doesn’t involve swallowing everything.”
For a breathless moment, everything seemed to stop.
The red warding, the blue alerts,
Ainera’s breathing,
even Lune’s twofold heartbeat.
In the middle of that silence, the abyss spoke.
“You would… call me by name?”
Lune nodded.
“Instead of leaving you as a ‘nameless shadow,’
I’ll let you exist inside me, and in this world,
as a single name.
Don’t devour me.
Stand with me.”
Ainera’s eyes flew wide.
“Lune, that’s dangerous.
You’re not just loosening the seal—
you’re letting it inside.”
Lune drew in a short breath.
“When I opened the first seal, I realized something.
What breaks me has always been denial.
It was the things I refused to accept
that ate away at me from the inside.
So this time… I’m going to accept it.”
The shape of the abyss quivered.
Black mist curled around Lune’s ankles, gathering there.
Cold and heavy—
yet somehow, not entirely unfamiliar.
“Then… give me a name,” Lune said softly.
“You’re the collection of what was cast away,
the will of what was forgotten.
From now on, you—”
But the abyss finished the sentence first.
“Erebos.”
The sound was low, but unmistakably clear.
“It’s the name the world gave me long ago.”
Lune repeated it, slowly.
“Erebos…”
The name rang out inside the warded space.
A red wave surged once, violently—
then softened and slowly stilled.
Across the city,
the crimson leaking through its hidden fractures
dimmed, just a little.
“…You’ve given the collective shadow
a name with which it can recognize itself,”
Ainera murmured.
“There’s nothing like this in the records.”
The abyss—no, Erebos—
let out a faint, crooked laugh.
“Good. Then let’s do this.
I won’t ‘consume’ you anymore.
Instead, I’ll look at the world through you.
Through your heart,
I’ll remember what was forgotten.”
Lune steadied her breathing and laid her hand over her chest.
The red sigil flared once with sharp light,
and within it, a new stroke was drawn—
like the first line of a vast name being written.
The first seal—
Gate of Shadows, released.
She said the words only in her mind.
But just because the gate was open now
did not mean everything beyond it was safe.
“Don’t forget,” Ainera warned.
“This is the start of coexistence, not its end.
The moment you begin to deny yourself again,
Erebos can slip through that crack
and sweep over the world.”
Lune nodded.
“That’s why… I won’t lie to myself anymore.
When it’s dark, I’ll say it’s dark.
When it hurts, I’ll say it hurts.
That was your first condition, wasn’t it, Erebos?”
The abyss’s voice drifted away,
a whisper fading into distance.
“Yes.
That is our first contract, Key.”
—
When Lune stepped back out of the ruins,
the sky was still not fully bright.
But the darkness felt… just a shade lighter than before.
Bise came running from afar, gasping for breath.
“You’re alive? Eyes look… better than 예상했는데.”
He scanned her face,
then deliberately put on a crooked grin.
“Though I swear your expression’s changed a little.”
Lune thought about that for a second,
then let an awkward, honest smile slip out.
“Really?
I do… feel a little lighter.”
Bise bumped her shoulder with his, half-jokingly.
“Good. Then let’s go crack open the second gate, main character.
The world’s waiting on you, you know.”
Lune lifted her gaze to the sky.
Inside her chest,
the two hearts that had beaten out of sync
were slowly, cautiously beginning to fall into the same rhythm.
They were not perfectly one yet—
but at least they no longer denied each other’s existence.
A precarious, living balance.
“Yeah,”
Lune murmured.
“The Gate of Shadows is open now.
Next… I’ll have to find the Gate of Light.”
Her feet turned toward the city.
And everywhere she walked,
unseen patterns of emotion
trembled quietly in her wake.
